Aga Khan High School, Mombasa students win silver and bronze in The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition

Five students from the Aga Khan High School (AKHS), Mombasa received silver and bronze awards in The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition this year, the world's oldest international schools' writing competition.

The competition’s theme for this year was ‘Our Commonwealth’, reflecting on Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s service to the Commonwealth and the importance of positively contributing to our communities. Over 26,000 entries were received, with winners and runners-up from Australia, India, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. From AKHS, Mombasa, the following students received awards: 

  • Abdalla Kalela (silver)
  • Myra Kamene (silver)
  • Rudraa Pandya (silver)
  • Rukia Kekuwe (bronze)
  • Alwy Ahmed (bronze)

Alwy and Abdalla’s essays focused on what their experiences might have been like serving their community as frontline healthcare workers and why service matters, while Myra, Rudraa and Rukia wrote speeches as heads of government and what key challenges they would want to address, such as climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, terrorism and more.
