Junior School focus on the theme "A Season for Giving"

After many years of drought and then the flash floods caused by last month’s El Nino rains, many people in and near Malindi, Kenya have been struggling to survive. A group of grade five students in the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa’s Junior School were concerned by the plight of these people and wanted to help.

The students met and discussed what they might be able to do and focused on the theme of ‘A Season for Giving’ and decided to organize a food drive for the people in need. The group made posters and sent notes home asking fellow students to donate food items to be sent to the people of Malindi at the end of the term. They then organized, advertised and held a Christmas Craft and Bake sale and raised over 7,000 Kenyan Shillings. The students purchased maize flour, sugar, rice, beans, tea and other items to add to the donated goods.

The Junior School collected 183 kg of maize flour, 42 kg rice, 31 kg beans, 22 litres of cooking oil, and 20 kg of sugar as well as other food items. These goods were presented to the MP for Malindi, Mr Gideon Mung’aro at the Junior School’s final assembly of the term by Mr Wilkins, Head of Junior School.
