Annual Day at AKHSS, Hunza

The 23rd Annual Day of AKHSS, H was celebrated on October 31, 2009.

The 23rd Annual Day of Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Hunza (AKHSS, H) was celebrated on October 31, 2009. The stage decoration and arrangement for the Day was done by the students of grade 12. The programme started with Qiraat, Naat and words of welcome said by students in their mother tongues (five local languages with different dialects spoken by the students – Burushaski: including the dialects of Central Hunza, Nagar & Yasin; Wakhi; Khuwar; Balti and Shina: including the dialects of lower Hunza, Gilgit, Ghizer, and Astore). The other items of the programme included a national song, a performance of William Shakespeare’s tragedy “King Lear”, Urdu Skit high lighting social issues written by the students of grade 12, Creative Qawali on the regional, national and international concerns composed by the students of grade 11 and 12, and English on “Mercy Killing” and Urdu debates on “Kia aurat duniya ki sub se majboor aur lachar makhluq?” meaning “Is woman the most suppressed creature of the world?” (Two debates in each language, one in favour of and the other against the topic, written by students and selected from the school’s Inter-House Annual Students’ Week Debate competitions). Certificates and prizes were distributed at the end of the programme amongst the best result achievers in the AKU-EB examinations in 2009, the best student of the Year, the best player of the Year, and the best House Captain of the Year; Appreciation letters were also given to the teachers who had been able to produce best subject results in their respective subjects in the AKU-EB annual examinations in 2009 and to the Best House In-charge of the Year 2009. Refreshments were served at the end of the programme.

About 600 guests including parents, regional notables, heads of the educational institutions and civic organizations and the students of other schools/colleges attended the programme. The Chief Guest of the Programme was Dr. Khwaja Khan President Ismail Council for Hunza. The Chief Guest appreciated the quality of the programme, the quality of education offered at the school and the role of AKHSS, H in providing excellent female leadership in various fields to the region. He also advised the parents to extend their full support and cooperation to the school in further improving its services to the talented girls of the area. Ms. Khadija Khan, the General Manager AKES, P – Gilgit, highlighted the aims and objectives of the higher secondary schools and talked about the importance of the role of parents and students in assisting the schools in the improvement of the educational facilities. She also discussed the significance of the teachers’ role in preparing students for the future leadership positions.

The guests appreciated each item of the programme including the English language ability, creativity, confidence, acting and the presentation skills of the students. They also congratulated the school on its efforts to provide such platforms to the students to enhance their latent potentials and skills.

Overall, the programme remained very successful. The reflections of the teachers attributed the success of the programme to the continuous co-curricular activities arranged at classroom, inter-house and inter-school levels, team work of the management, teachers and the students, the specifically guided rehearsals of each item, and the hard work, responsibility and dedication, especially on part of the students in writing, learning and presenting each item. However, the teachers also noted that the school needs to work on improving the students’ Urdu speaking skills, especially, their pronunciation and grammar.
