AKA, Hyderabad launches its Professional Development Centre

The new Professional Development Centre (PDC) building will host workshops, seminars, and small conferences that focus on education.  

Reiterating the mission of the Aga Khan Academies to make each Aga Khan Academy a centre of excellence for professional development, learning opportunities and activities for teachers at the Academy in Hyderabad will be housed in the first building to be constructed. The intent is to promote best practices in teaching and learning in the schools around the academy. This new building will host workshops, seminars, and small conferences that focus on education.

The first of these, the Professional Learning for Educators Series (PLES)- Programme for Teachers of English will be conducted in the first two weeks of June, 2010 and programme for Mathematics Teachers is being developed for delivery later in the year. The PLES programmes, designed by the Aga Khan Academies, respond to the need to improve the standard of teaching and learning identified during extensive market research and interaction with government and departments of education. The series will also later include programmes for teachers in other subject areas as well as specialised programmes focusing on a variety of skills and understandings related to education; for example a programme for school leaders (being designed and offered in collaboration with the Aga Khan University – Institute for Educational Development) focusing on enhancing and improving pedagogical leadership skills.

The new building will also host the team of lead teachers of the AKA,Hyderabad, who will be charged with the mission to develop the Academy’s curriculum, which will incorporate the principles of the IB with the Indian National Curriculum and the Aga Khan Strands.

Through its professional development provision the Academy will facilitate the creation of an international professional community of competent, well resourced teachers that will continue to support and collaborate with one another through materials development and sharing, and establish diverse academic, cultural, and social projects.
