As part of their annual activities for the day, AKES, India carried out the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) ShakeOut, which is a multi-country earthquake drill. This initiative, now in its 13th year, is led by the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat and Focus Humanitarian Assistance.

The campaign endorsed the globally acknowledged “Drop, Cover and Hold On” technique, which is crucial for immediate self-protection during an earthquake. This approach reduces the risk of exposure to potential dangers such as falling objects and debris. The participants were taught to assess themselves for injuries, assist others carefully once the shaking has ceased and, if needed, to relocate to a secure open area.

ShakeOut Day also offered detailed instructions for different situations, including safeguarding oneself during earthquakes while sleeping, driving, praying, caring for infants and being near the ocean. These diverse guidelines ensured individuals were well-equipped to protect themselves, regardless of their specific circumstances. This initiative underscores AKDN’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all its members and affiliated agencies.

“By teaching children earthquake safety from a young age, we are not only preparing them for emergencies but also promoting our broader mission of providing a holistic education that encompasses physical, mental and emotional well-being,” said Mr Haribabu Mannappan, regional manager of the Facilities and Capital Project.

The Aga Khan Education Service, India's participation in earthquake safety drills like the ShakeOut campaign reflects its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff within its network of schools.
