Introduction

For over 50 years, the Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan School has been a proud establishment as one of Karachi’s best schools.

Since its inception in 1965, SMS Aga Khan School has been setting standards for excellence in academics and sports. Thousands of individuals all over the world, who are exceling in their professional lives, are proud to call themselves SMS alumni.

Today, the School serves over 3,000 students with classes ranging from pre-primary to the secondary level. All its students sit for their secondary school certificate through the Aga Khan University Education Board.

SMS Aga Khan School strives to create a harmonious balance between academic demands, sporting and cultural activities, and community life. It challenges its pupils to be intellectually inquisitive and socially conscious. The School believes that while what students know is important, the true measure of a student’s education is the ability to analyse what they do not know.

Parent Teacher Interaction

Every quarter, the School faculty keeps parents posted on their children’s academic performance, attendance and school participation. The School functions in a friendly environment that supports and encourages an on-going partnership between the school, parents and management. Parents assist by:

  • Reviewing the school's progress through Parent Teacher Meetings
  • Supporting the school's various activities and initiatives, e.g. organising social events for students

The school's orientation programmes give parents and students an opportunity to interact, give feedback and exchange ideas with the School management. We encourage parents to be involved in the social and emotional development of their children. Our focus lies in developing parents as critical partners, actively contributing to the effective functioning of the school.

Professional Development

The School Management Team and the Education Office, South, is committed to providing support and facilitation through various interventions. The interventions are pre-service and in-service teacher professional development programmes.

Teacher Induction is a systematic support system for beginner teachers, focusing on improving effective instructional strategies to increase student achievement. The programme has a 20-hour face-to-face training module along with one-to-one support in the field.

The Summer Learning Programme is a 100-hour programme offered by the team leaders of each faculty. It includes face-to-face and online learning modules. The programme aims to deepen teachers’ content knowledge and pedagogical skills in order to meet the needs of our students.

Ongoing support is a salient feature of the professional development programme. Support is provided by school-based Academic Coordinators and includes but is not limited to analysis of student work, co-planning, co-teaching, guidance through the evaluation system, assessing student performance, reflective practices, etc.

In addition, the Aga Khan Education Service, Pakistan regularly organises workshops and seminars for management and teaching staff according to identified needs. Topics include teaching methodology, classroom management and use of information technology in teaching.

Teachers are also nominated for courses conducted by various renowned organizations including the Aga Khan University’s Institute for Educational Development, Teachers Resource Centre (TRC), Society of Pakistan English Language Teachers (SPELT), Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) and the University of Karachi.

Staff appraisal or Teacher Performance Monitoring is an integral part of maintaining high-quality teaching in our schools. Aga Khan Schools follow an intensive appraisal system to monitor the progress of its faculty and staff. Staff appraisal takes place throughout the year. Based on the appraisals, the best teachers in the system are identified and appreciated each year.
